To goggles or not to goggles?

A frequently asked question we recieve from our parents is whether its necessary to wear goggles during class. At Aquabubs, we encourage our students to wear goggles from Dolphins 2 onwards. However, we do believe in the advantages of not wearing goggles as well.

Advantages of wearing goggles:

  • Goggles are definitely helpful when it comes to underwater visibility, which is great when it comes to building confidence-- especially for beginner swimmers.

  • It is also the best way to protect your eyes. Our Dolphins 2 swimmers spend a lot of their lesson time under the water, so it is definitely advisable to protect their eyes. Our Sharks swimmers also put their faces in the water for most of the lesson and goggles do help.

As you can see, wearing swimming goggles helps children to prevent eyes getting sore from chlorine in the pool. However, we do not consider them as a necessity during our classes if your child’s eyes are not overly sensitive and there are some advantages of not wearing goggles during class time:

Advantages of not wearing goggles:

  • Swimming without goggles helps practice a very crucial safety skill. Sometimes a child may be in a situation under water and needs to be able to manoeuvre themselves. Learning how to identify objects without wearing goggles in the water helps a child navigate their way back to safety if they accidentally fall into the pool without wearing goggles.

In conclusion, goggles are very useful and an essential part of swimming lessons, but we cannot forget the importance of practicing without wearing goggles as well. At Aquabubs, goggles are worn for most of the lesson and we encourage our students to take off their goggles when they swim on their back and come up with fun activities such as picking up underwater objects without wearing their goggles to practice.
